Reimagining Product Strategy for Maker’s Red Box
Maker's Red Box partners with us to revolutionize their product management and scale their educational innovation. Our common goal is to transform a beloved maker education program into a market-ready solution while preserving the hands-on learning experience that makes their approach unique and impactful.
Maker's Red Box is an innovative educational technology company founded in 2015, specializing in maker pedagogy and comprehensive competency development programs. Their unique offering combines teacher training with an engaging curriculum package, delivered through a combination of hands-on workshops and tutorial-style learning materials.
Their comprehensive program packages offer everything schools need to create effective makerspaces, bridging the crucial gap between traditional education and future workforce needs. Whether through direct sales or corporate CSR initiatives, Maker’s Red Box has been bringing the maker movement to classrooms worldwide. From Lithuania to South Africa and Kuwait, they've impacted over 10,000 students and 300 teachers.
THE CHALLENGE: SCALING INNOVATION
Despite positive feedback from teachers, parents, and students, and demonstrable success in competency development, Maker's Red Box faced challenges in scaling their product and achieving consistent market success. The company needed to transition from a "perfect product" mindset to a more market-oriented approach. They needed expert guidance to:
-
Find and validate product-market fit
-
Managing organizational change
-
Establish effective product management practices
-
Establishing data-driven decision-making processes
ENTERING BOBCATS CODING
In the summer of 2024, Makers Red Box partnered with Bobcats Coding to revolutionize their product management approach. Our mission went beyond traditional product management—we needed to help them scale their educational innovation while maintaining the quality and impact that made them special. It was clear to us that we needed to assign a senior product manager to the project who had previously built several companies and managed numerous lean startups seeking product-market fit, thus being able to benefit Makers' Red Box not only in product management tasks but also in leading the Development Team.
OUR APPROACH
Bobcats Coding provided a Senior Product Manager to guide the necessary transformation. Our intervention focused on several key areas and initialized the following:
01
Discovery and Assessment
We kicked off with an intensive workshop series involving over 50% of the company:
-
Generated and documented approximately 70 hypotheses for achieving product-market fit
-
Mapped existing products and development initiatives
-
Conducted market research using the snowball method
02
Cultural Transformation
The workshops also had a cultural change goal; it was important for everyone to understand what the organization was doing and why. These sessions were catalysts for change. The team started the adoption of lean startup methodology and agile practices:
-
Established cross-functional collaboration between marketing and product teams
-
Facilitate retrospectives and organizational learning
-
Created champions of change within the organization
03
Product Strategy Realignment
We introduced and practiced a learning-first mindset, shifting focus from revenue to validated learning. We started small and fast and continue to reach:
-
Developed a structured product discovery pipeline
-
Shifting the company towards a more data-driven approach for decision-making, prioritization, and customer management
-
Created success metrics focused on learning and innovation
04
Innovation Integration
We succeeded in establishing innovation as the primary focus for the company in the next period, which brought the following milestones:
-
Established product discovery as a significant step before we start building features
-
Started measuring and tracking innovation
-
Guided the implementation of AI features in their "City of the Future" product
HOW DOES THE CITY OF THE FUTURE GET SMARTER WITH AI?
One of the most exciting developments in our collaboration was the integration of AI technology into Makers Red Box's "City of the Future" product. In a strategic move to modernize the learning experience, we helped transform traditional image and Google search activities into AI-powered interactions using ChatGPT.
This wasn't just about implementing new technology for the sake of being innovative. The main goal was to showcase to teachers how AI can be a valuable tool for developing various competencies. We focused on giving teachers an example of how to use AI not as a "cheat sheet," but as a tool that effectively enhances their learning journey. This pedagogical work will be captured in a post on the Maker’s Red Box blog, where you can follow the exact path this AI development took.
Our PM facilitated Maker’s Red Box’s content developer team through every step of this innovative journey:
-
Feature Implementation Strategy: Developing a roadmap for seamlessly integrating AI capabilities without disrupting the existing learning experience
-
Market Positioning: Crafting a compelling narrative around AI integration that resonates with educators and decision-makers
-
Competency Framework Evolution: Supporting how the new AI feature would be incorporated into the competency matrix
-
Go-to-Market Strategy: Contributing a comprehensive launch plan that highlighted the educational benefits of AI integration while addressing potential concerns from stakeholders
OUR WORKING STYLE
At the heart of our successful partnership with Maker’s Red Box lies a carefully orchestrated collaboration model. In addition to regular strategic sessions, our product manager guides a four-person development team toward market research, and idea validation, while facilitating seamless coordination between the curriculum developers, editor and designer.
